An Introduction to Fast Food Franchising

The fast food franchise is one of the most popular types of franchise in the world – McDonald’s is certainly the company that most people think of first when they hear the word franchise. With thousands of locations around the world, McDonald’s has proved that you can take a simple business concept for a quick dining experience and adapt it to other cultures masterfully. Revenues in the billions from their wide range of stores makes McDonald’s one of the world’s most successful companies, providing food to millions of people over the course of their company’s lifetime. As the creator of a restaurant business, you may dream of one day enjoying success on the level of the major franchises – what does it take to develop your restaurant into a fast food franchise? Let’s look at some of the issues which are involved in franchising and how you can make the jump!

For starters, as you consider making your restaurant into a franchise you should think about the kind of cuisine which you are serving. You will need to be sure that the food you are serving is of a kind that people will enjoy in a wide variety of markets. Tastes differ from place to place – the hamburger is a kind of fast food which people enjoy all over the world, although there are even exceptions to this – in India, where eating the meat of a cow is forbidden by the tenets of the Hindu religion, McDonald’s hamburgers cannot enjoy the same level of success that they have in western countries. Still, chances are that you aren’t looking to create a major international franchise just yet – for the moment you will probably be satisfied if you can grow beyond your local area and form successful locations in places across the country!

To make sure that your recipes have the punch that they need to be successful among people of different localities, you should run taste tests and perform market research. See what kind of food the people in different parts of the country are interested in eating and what kind of niches there are in the local fast food markets which are waiting to be filled. If you can identify a hole in the market where there is demand and find a way to fill it, or if you can simply satisfy the public’s demand for burgers, fried chicken, or any of the other kinds of fast food that they love so much and be better than the other competitors, then you may have a strong case for making a fast food franchise out of the restaurant that you have developed.

If you are sure that the food that you making is the right kind for locations across the country, the next step is to plan how you will run the franchise – there are a lot of things to consider if you are going to want to create a new company to deal with all of the franchise aspects of your business. In fact, running a franchise is a very different kind of business than actually running a restaurant. The supply issues are more complicated – a lot of your efforts will have to go into large scale logistics to get the supplies and gear that your franchisees need to them. A strong focus on customer service will also be a big part of your business and go a long way towards determining your success. You are also going to need to do constant research on where the best locations are for your stores (where they should be located to receive the greatest profits) and how your stores can be best marketed in each territory.

Even that is just the beginning – your franchise company is going to need a legal department, as the legal requirements for a franchise are different from the requirements for a simple corporation. You are also going to need a sales department which will sell the franchise to potential franchisees through franchise fairs and other venues. Advertising and marketing will be important in getting the word out to potential investors, and you are going to want to put even more effort into the marketing of your brand to consumers. Constant research and constant reevaluation of the techniques that you use to do business are going to be important to you as you expand into new markets.

Before you start to sell the franchise to investors you are also going to have to spend a good deal of time codifying exactly what it means to run one of your stores. The details of the way that your franchisees’ stores should look and act need to be written into the contract. You will want to put clauses in so that the franchisees are legally obligated to run the business in the way that you specify, allowing you to set the appearance and the operational procedures of the franchisee locations. You also want to be able to provide the customers of your business with a consistent experience no matter which restaurant in the franchise chain they enter, so it is important that you put the obligation to conform to your standards into the contract.

Developing training materials and all of the paperwork and manuals that your franchisee locations will need is another task which will take a good deal of time. You need to make sure that these materials are well written and that they make sense to the degree that anyone who is opening a new franchise store will be able to understand them and to run things the way that you have specified. You may want to test out your training materials with the management of one of your own locations in order to see how successful they are in implementing your ideas. Based on that, you can rewrite the training materials for greater clarity and make sure that what you have written for the benefit of your new franchisees is up to the job of informing them correctly about their new duties.

About now, you should have a consistent business plan together – training materials and contracts should all be drawn up. With your business plan and the supporting documents you can now go to the bank and take out a loan for the expenses that you expect to have as you create your franchise business. Think about the process that you went through when you created your first restaurant – you had to do all of the research in advance, put together a consistent business plan with all of the information that the bank needed to see that it would work, and then take it to the bank so that you could get your business loan. You also needed to have a little extra space in the loan for a buffer to take care of the unexpected when it arrived. All of these same considerations should go into your research and preparation for applying for a new loan for the franchise business.

When you get the loan, you will put together your franchise office and start to sell the franchise to people through franchise fairs and all of the marketing channels that your sales department can identify. Hopefully, after a few months you will start to gain your first franchisees and they will begin building franchise locations across the country. Congratulations! Now you want to make sure that you have the right priorities to be successful in the long run – do not get so excited about your start-up franchise fees that you grow the business too quickly – if you simply expand for the sake of expansion and you do not put the right amount of effort of overseeing your individual franchisees, many of your franchise locations will fail and you will gain a poor reputation in the franchise industry.

Expand only at the rate at which you are able to keep most of your franchise locations running at a profit, and you will be able to impress investors. Only select people to run your franchise locations who have the right combination of a sound financial background and ability to obtain financial backing and business savvy through their market experience. It may feel wrong to turn people away during the first months, but that is what you will have to do if you want to choose only the best people to run your business locations.

If you think hard at every stage in the process and you do all of your planning and research in advance, you will find that you meet with success in the highly competitive fast food franchise arena. Good luck with developing your fast food franchise from the restaurants that you have built, and remember that if you treat the fast food franchise as its own business and take care to know what you are doing you will have the best chances of a profitable chain!
