Look Out! Potential Problems with Franchises

While there are a lot of potential benefits to owning a franchise, there are also many problems that franchisees run into as they try to get their business off the ground. Even after a franchise business has become established, there are sources of conflict which can lead to arguments between the franchisee and the franchisor, or obstacles with the local market and / or the expansion of the business which can make it hard for a franchisee to continue to be successful. With the right amount of research and planning, however, it is possible for franchisees to anticipate many of the potential issues and to come up with solutions. You might also find that when you consider the potential problems that can occur, your interest in running a franchise business may decrease. There is, of course, an entire universe of business options that you can pursue besides the franchise business model, so think carefully and come to a decision that is right for you!

One of the single biggest problems that you need to consider is whether or not you will be able to afford the franchise. You need to have a lot of money to get a new business running – even if it is a small franchise business. Usually you will need several thousand pounds or more to start up a new franchise in a leased location. You do not need to have this much money in the bank, but you will need to have enough of a credit history to get the bank to give you a loan – the franchisor company that you apply to will do its own research into your financial history, so you may want to obtain a copy of your credit report and make sure that you are looking like a good prospect from a financial perspective before you apply.

Once you have applied to the franchise programme you are going to want to discuss the potential costs of setting up a franchise in your area with the franchise company. They will usually be able to suggest either one or a number of the most suitable locations in your area for leasing space for your new franchise business. They may even insist on a specific location. This can be a source of contention between franchisees and their franchisors – the franchisor may only want to have a new franchise business in one specific place, and their idea of what the best place is may differ from yours. If you want to have the freedom to locate your business wherever you like, then you will need to start your own company free from the franchisor restrictions. If, however, you are comfortable with having the franchisor company tell you where to start your business, or you agree with their suggestion, then it should be fine.

As you look over the list of potential costs, make sure that you are getting the best and lowest prices every step of the way. If you identify parts of the budget which seem to be higher than necessary, then you need to discuss it with the franchise company and find out if there is a cheaper option – however usually with a franchise company you are limited by the agreement to purchasing your supplies and equipment through their suppliers and you will therefore have to pay the prices that they put forward. Again, this is a potential area for disagreement which you should consider in advance. This will help you to decide whether or not you are willing to abide by the terms of the franchise agreement. In the event that you break the franchise agreement and use other suppliers the franchisor is almost certain to revoke your contract and take away the right to use their name.

Besides the financial issues and control issues that you may have with a franchise company, you also need to think about your personal situation which the ownership of the franchise business will impinge upon and whether or not you are prepared for the amount of work that you will need to put in. For many people, the sheer amount of work involved in starting a new business will affect their decision to continue with a franchise business and they may decide that they would rather have complete freedom to decide their own destiny. It is true that it takes a lot of work to have a successful franchise business (or any other kind of business!) – you need to balance the amount of time spent in the business with the current state of your life and whether or not you have that much energy to commit to a long-term project.

Other barriers to getting involved in running your own franchise include personal relationships, which may suffer as a result of all of the energy that a franchise business requires. Often people will start to plan for a new franchise business, thinking that their significant other will be certain to support them in starting the business; however, once they start to actually communicate with their spouse they may find that there are a lot of questions they need to answer about what the business will mean for the both of them and how it will affect their relationship over the next few months. If the business is unsuccessful, how will it affect your status as a couple financially? How much strain will the beginning months of starting the business put on your relationship and will you be able to support each other through it and come out stronger as a result? These are all things to consider before you sign the first document and commit to the business.

All of these potential problems with franchise businesses also make some assumptions – that the environment in which you are planning to start the business is one which can support a new business of the kind that you are planning, and that the company which you are receiving the franchise from is one which is stable and reliable. Sadly, not all franchise companies can be relied upon for the same degree of service – there are a lot of ways, thankfully, that you can review the current state of a franchise company and find out whether or not it is one that can currently be relied upon. A simple search in the library and on the World Wide Web will help you to find recent articles on the franchise business in question in order that you can see if there are any ongoing legal problems or situations you should be aware of.

If there are legal problems with a company then you should definitely think carefully before becoming involved with them as a franchisee – you can get the details of any current legal proceedings from the local courts, usually for a small fee to cover the printing and shipping costs. Keep in mind that for the larger companies there are always people trying to profit by making small and spurious claims; the ones that you should keep an eye out for are ones which involve the breaking of criminal laws. If any of these kinds of cases have been taking place recently then you should get the full story before you make a move.

You should also pay attention to the state of the local economy and whether or not it is ready to support a business of your type. If an area is not ready for another restaurant, or if you are too similar to the local restaurants (people generally want a little variety, not the same kind of restaurant over and over again), then you might not be able to profit with a new food business in your area even if all of the other factors in setting up the franchise business are in order. Make sure that you do enough research to know whether or not a new franchise business will work in your local area in the first place, and you will then be in a position to continue along the path towards success!

To have a successful business you should keep in mind all of the possible benefits as well as the problems which can arise – as long as you are aware of all of the potential problems with franchises, you should be able to decide accurately whether or not a new franchise business is the right choice for you and for your life at the moment!
