Franchise fees and what are they for?

A large part of the cost of setting up a new franchise is the franchise fee. The franchise fee is a flat fee that anyone who sets up an instance of a certain business will need. With the franchise fee you gain a lot of different types of support from the franchise company – the company which owns the brand and which is tasked with helping you and others who set up stores in the franchise. While the franchise fee may seem like a large cost (and it is, depending on what kind of franchise you have chosen to go with and how large of a name it is) the services and assistance that you get from the franchise company can more than make up for it. Here are some of the things that you get as a result of your franchise fee and why going with a franchise company is worth the extra money.

Of course, the single biggest reason that a lot of people first think about when they decide to go with a franchise is the name. Customers are generally looking for a consistent experience these days – they are less and less likely to go into small stores run by individuals with products and services that they are unfamiliar with. When a customer thinks about whether or not to enter a store there is a certain amount of mental inertia which needs to be overcome – if a store in unfamiliar the customer will spend time judging the outer appearance of the store, whatever the menu says and so on, and they will ultimately come to a decision. The more time that they spend on their decision, however, the less likely they are to actually go in.

With a known brand you avoid that problem – people already know what the store will be like and they can go in almost “automatically”, knowing what kind of experience to expect and often knowing exactly what they intend to order before they even go in. As soon as people see that a new restaurant or franchise store of a kind which they recognize is in town, they list that store and its location within their brains so that they next time they are thinking about lunch they are likely to reconsider the familiar branded store in the known location.

This brand knowledge is the result of a long term consistent marketing campaign – the kind of marketing campaign that you as a small business owner / franchise owner do not have nearly enough money to create on your own. The marketing campaigns of the major restaurants and franchise brands have long histories all their own and the franchise identities have become a part of popular culture. You can’t buy that kind of marketing, but the good news it that you don’t have to – you can take advantage of it automatically by starting a franchise and benefit from the relatively small sum that you spent on your franchise fee.

The benefits that you receive from paying a franchise fee do not stop there; that is just the beginning. When you run a franchise type business, you are putting together a business according to a template which has been proven – this gives you a big advantage over a large number of businesses which will try to get started over the same time period; the business model that you are trying has been tried before and it has been successful. By going with a proven model instead of something that you have come up with yourself you know that the model itself is sound and will work if you apply it in the right situation and with the right management choices.

Usually there will be rules in the contract that you sign when you pay the franchise fee – the franchise agreement will stipulate that you have to run the business in a certain way. Things such as the outer and inner appearance of the store, the way that the employees dress, the kinds of products that you can offer for sale, the sales and special promotions that you can run – all of these will be dictated in large part by the terms of the contract and the main franchise company. The franchise company will be able to run new promotions through your store and when it does so it will usually provide you with all of the materials – sending you advertising flyers, stand-up figures and all of the information that you need to stay in line with the movements of the franchise parent.

While all of these rules can be chafing to some, the person who chooses to go with a franchise business does so in the knowledge that they will be following the rules of the franchise business in order to better their chances of success. In fact, all of the rules that a franchise company offers can be seen as help, as they are known to work and they provide you with answers to questions which you would otherwise have to spend a lot of time and research, and possibly trial and error, working out yourself. By having all of the answers ahead of time you can spend less time trying to figure things out and more time actually running the business and seeing if it is well suited to the area and capable of showing a profit. All of this takes the guesswork out of running a business.

There are still more benefits that you get from running a franchise business. A significant one with the larger franchise in particular, but also with others, is that the franchise company will usually be able to get you access to the lowest prices on the supplies and equipment that you need to run the business. Not only will you have a list of exactly what you need to keep the business going, you will be able to get good prices and save money on all of your purchases, which in turn helps to ensure a strong bottom line and increase the odds that you will turn an easy profit with your business.

The franchise company is likely to help you in picking the best location for your business – which can be a large help because no matter what kind of business you have the location will be of critical importance. Even if you advertise, a place which does not have a good flow of potential walk-in customers or drive-by customers will have a hard time finding the business that it needs to stay afloat. The people at the franchise company have a lot of experience in finding the best places for a new franchise business – they know which kinds of locations have worked and which ones haven’t, and they have run studies that often let them easily identify the best place in an area for a new store.

You will also get advice from the franchise company on all kinds of management tasks – they can tell you the best ways to handle common situations that arise, how to hire and fire employees and keep a strong employee base that you can rely on, how to interact with the local media, how to train your employees and so on. Almost every possible situation that you are likely to face has been faced by someone else working for the franchise in the past, so you will be able to reap the benefits of their experience to make the right decisions that first time and plot a course for your business which lets you manage things well.

Finally, your franchise fee is useful in that when you work with a major franchise company to put your business together you will be going to a local bank to get a loan to pay for most of the start-up expenses. No matter what kind of business you want to start you are very likely to be taking a trip to the bank for a business loan, and when you go with the assistance of a franchise company behind you the bank will know that you have the confidence of the large and established company and as a result will think of you as a good investment. The easier it is to work with the bank the better your experience will be as you will have access to good terms and to the funds that you need to be a success.

These are all great reasons to buy a franchise – reasons which thousands of people every year find compelling enough that they are willing to pay hundreds or thousands of pounds on their franchise fee. As you consider starting a new business, weigh these benefits and the ways in which they improve your odds of a good business experience against the cost of the franchise fee, and ask yourself whether the benefits outweigh the price. Chances are you will find that you get the most out of a franchise business and if you pay a franchise fee you will be satisfied with what you get in return.
