The Characteristics of an Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is someone who decides that they are going to pursue a career with their own business – by starting one’s own business, one is able to enjoy a higher level of freedom and financial success than one would ever be able to realise when working as an employee. There are lots and lots of reasons to become an entrepreneur, but only a small percentage of people ever succeed. What makes some people succeed in forming their own businesses and ascending to the next level in life while others continue to work for bosses and never seem to be able to make that step? In this article we will look at some of the qualities and characteristics of a successful entrepreneur and find out what separates the entrepreneur from the employee.

First of all, an entrepreneur is a self-starter. Entrepreneurs are people who are more interested in starting their own business and running things themselves than taking orders from others – while other people may be content to follow instructions and to do what they are told, an entrepreneur will be more interested in taking the initiative and making decisions on his / her own. Because the entrepreneur is able to start things without being told by other people, an entrepreneur is a natural leader and is able to determine the course of his / her own business while telling his / her employees what to do.

Because of this, an entrepreneur is someone who takes responsibility for his / her own actions. The successful entrepreneur realises that he / she is the one on which everything depends upon, and if he / she does not take responsibility things will not play out in the way that they are supposed to. By taking responsibility, the entrepreneur is willing to put in more effort than an ordinary person and to do whatever the situation requires; the entrepreneur does not rely on other people to do things and then make excuses if they should fail – a successful entrepreneur will always keep in mind that people are fallible and that sometimes problems will come up which the entrepreneur should be ready to step in and deal with.

Since an entrepreneur realises that in order to be successful one must take responsibility, the entrepreneur will put in the effort and do the work that is required to achieve success. To this end, an entrepreneur will do all of the research and planning that it takes to know what the correct course of action is, no matter what kind of situation arises. While mistakes may occasionally be made, the fact that the entrepreneur is ready to take responsibility for mistakes and find a way to get around them means that the entrepreneur can learn from experience and improve the future success of his / her company.

When an entrepreneur knows what is best for the company, the entrepreneur will be able to be successful. A good entrepreneur realises that sometimes running a company means that it is necessary to keep track of many little things which can impact upon the future of the company, and sometimes it is necessary to delegate responsibility to other people. When there is too much for one person to do, the entrepreneur will have no problem delegating work to people who he / she knows can do it. An entrepreneur who is good at leading people will realize that for employees to do the best job, he / she should give them the work that they are supposed to do and then give them the space that they require so that they can relax and focus on their work free of stress or distraction.

A good entrepreneur is financially responsible; this kind of person will make sure that bills are paid on time and that all of the supplies and services which are required by the company will be received because the cash flow of the business and the payments for the things that the business needs are all in order. If the entrepreneur needs help in getting the accounting done, the entrepreneur will hire an accountant to take care of the monetary issues, but the entrepreneur will also remember that the financial status of the company is his own responsibility and see to it that he / she keeps an eye on the bottom line of the company even as it is being managed by the financial help.

An entrepreneur who is capable of running a company effectively is a good communicator and is able to convey his / her intentions easily to the people who are in his / her charge. If there are problems with miscommunication the entrepreneur will not become upset, but will simply focus on correcting the situation and making sure that the employees and he / she are on the same page from that point on. Fix the problem, not the blame – this is an important guideline for the successful entrepreneur; however, a good entrepreneur will also make sure that employees have the highest standards of conduct and see to it that they also take responsibility for their actions.

If an entrepreneur does not have the knowledge and skills which are required to run his / her company effectively, then the entrepreneur will take classes or do research to improve the situation. An entrepreneur has to be honest with himself / herself about his / her skills, and know when it is possible for him / her to handle a situation independently. There are times when the entrepreneur will require the assistance of others as far as advice / training / etc. and the successful entrepreneur will not hesitate to get the help that he / she needs in these kinds of situations.

An entrepreneur will take advantage of any situation which makes it easier for him / her to run the business effectively, or any situation which allows them a greater probability of success. To this end, the entrepreneur will engage in negotiations with the people who provide supplies, equipment, and all of the other things that his / her business depends upon to try and get the best prices; the entrepreneur will engage in extended negotiations on things which relate to the long term costs of doing business and will try to make sure that he / she always gets the best prices for everything the business requires.

To increase the odds that his / her business will be a success, an entrepreneur will try to form cooperative partnerships and good business arrangements with other companies when it suits his / her ends. By cooperating with other business people when there is a good reason to, the entrepreneur will form connections which make it easier to do business, providing a wider range of options when the entrepreneur is looking for ways to lower costs and improve profits. There are always lots of ways that businesses can work together to get the best results – cooperative relationships make it possible for both companies to reap the rewards of greater efficiency and are a great thing for the entrepreneur to pursue.

To get the highest profits and the greatest stability for his business, a good entrepreneur will always be on the lookout for ways to expand the company – new product lines, new services and new ways of taking care of the current needs of the company will help the entrepreneur to expand his / her business into new areas and improve all of the company’s existing characteristics. The more effort that the entrepreneur puts into his / her business and finding ways to make it stronger, the better the entrepreneur’s odds will be of having a company which is a continuing success.

Finally, an entrepreneur should be able to identify new business opportunities and know when there is an opportunity to take advantage of an emerging market and move into a new line of business. Whenever there is a new way in which the entrepreneur can create a company and make a profit from helping people with varying lines of goods and services which the entrepreneur is in a unique position to provide, the entrepreneur should be ready to make a move and create a success story out of the business opportunities that present themselves as time goes by.

These are all characteristics of an entrepreneur – not all entrepreneurs have all of these characteristics but the most successful ones do and as a result they are able to make more money than people who simply work for a company all of their lives. If you are interested in being an entrepreneur, or if you already are, think about these characteristics and see which of them you can honestly say you have exhibited in your life and in your business dealings. I wish you the best of luck in finding success as an entrepreneur and hope that you have as many of these successful business entrepreneur characteristics as possible!
