Develop Your Franchise

So you've had some initial success in turning your business into a franchise – you managed to form a franchise company, start selling your franchise plans to franchisees, and now you have some new business locations producing the same goods and services which made your original business a big success at home. Congratulations on taking this major step and making a franchise company out of the business that you started; by doing so you have proven that your business fulfills a need that people have in many places beyond your local market, and you have gone a long way towards having the biggest and most successful company possible based on your ideas.

Where do you go from here in forming a bigger and better franchise? There are many ways that a franchise can develop and grow – developing your franchise is something that you will want to continue working on for its entire life; there are always numerous small ways in which a franchise can be improved and expanded, and you can make it so that more and more people enter into business with your franchise as franchisees and as customers, improving your profits and the quality of your company. Let’s look at a few of the ways in which a franchise may be developed so that it can attain its full potential.

The marketing activities that you engage in towards the consumer are a big part of your franchise’s image – not only do advertising and marketing actions directed at your customers improve your customer base and bring in greater profits along the entirety of your chain, they also give you a larger standing in the public “mind share”, and make it so that when people see your company at franchise fairs and in all the places where franchise opportunities are listed they are more likely to remember your company and to think that it would make a good franchise for them. There are two prongs to your marketing approach – some of your marketing money will be direct to the consumer, and some of them will be involved in the sales team which sells your franchise to investors. Marketing to the consumer gives you the advantage of improving your standing with both of these groups, consumers and potential franchisees, at the same time.

Direct marketing to the franchisee is also important as you can provide them with the specific information which shows them how good an opportunity you are offering them. Of course, you need to see to it that you are providing them with the best possible opportunity in the first place – go through the list of benefits that you offer to potential investors and make sure that what you are offering is the best possible deal. People want to get their money’s worth when they invest in your franchise, and your potential franchisees will want to see that they receive the right amount of support and advice, along with preferential prices on their supplies and a good chance of a strong profit with their new franchise business. The money that you spend on improving the marketing of your franchise package will result in more money coming in through investors and help your franchise to develop and grow!

One way that you can get more franchisees interested in your business and grow the franchise is by improving your customer service. Better customer service for the franchise company means that whenever a franchisee calls in with a question about how to handle a situation with the business, you have the resources to provide them with a well considered answer. As the franchise company, you have the advantage of experience within the business; you know how the business has been successfully adapted to different markets and you also know which practices have not worked. Your customer service department should be well trained and prepared to share this information with the franchisees, sending them information and being available to handle all their inquiries. Improve your franchisee customer service, and you will improve your success levels and reputation. Improve your reputation, and you will get more investment money!

Improving your research into the local markets and the national market is a good way to develop the franchise. You may find that there is a particular new kind of product or service you can add to your line-up which will help give your franchise the advantage over its competitors. By making some well informed changes to the way that you do business and experimenting with local promotions and new products you can pave the way for additional profits. There is always room to expand on your basic concepts – just do not expand randomly. Use the results of careful market research and always have backup data for any course of action which you consider. Common sense and the right amount of time and effort spent in planning will give you the edge that you need to develop your franchise beyond all others.

By improving your training materials you can have a positive effect on the consistency of the experience that your customers are provided with, and thus improve the overall reputation and success of your company. This may seem like a relatively minor means of improvement for your franchise company, but it is actually right at the heart of what you need to consider if you want to be truly successful. As a franchise company, the training materials and manuals that you supply your franchisees are at the heart of your business – any improvements that you make to these materials will result in improvements in your business across the board. Test out your training materials and make sure that they get the points across clearly and succinctly. Anyone who may be working for one of your franchise locations should be able to understand the franchise materials that you supply.

Another way that you can develop your franchise to make a lot more money is to renegotiate your supply contracts. When you had a smaller business you probably had to take a certain price for your supplies; the bigger that your company gets and the more supplies that you purchase the lower rates you should have to pay. Regular renegotiations of your supply contracts as you grow are a good way for you to get the best prices and develop your franchise so that you make the highest profits possible. Try not to let supply companies lock you into a long term contract early on, as you may regret it later when you need more and more supplies and have to keep on paying the same prices. Stay flexible in terms of what you can do with your suppliers and go with the suppliers who provide you with the best service and the best prices.

Finally, make sure that as you develop your franchise you never lose sight of the importance of making sure that your individual locations are as successful as they can possibly be – if you forget that you need to support your franchisees then your franchise business will fail. On one level your franchise company is performing a service for the customers at all your franchise locations. On another level it is performing a service for the franchisees. You need to keep both these groups of customers happy if you are going to be an ongoing success, so keep track of all of the ways that you can improve your service to the customers and to the franchisees to be the best franchise company you can be.

Pursue a balance between expansion and between the services which you make available, so that you can reap the highest levels of profit while giving people the level of quality service which they deserve. At some point you will have to make decisions regarding the expenses that your company undertakes and the ways in which it can expand, and the choices that you make should always be directed at strong long term growth. Plan for the far future while not neglecting the things that you need to take care of today, and your franchise will be well managed.

This article should have given you a number of ideas on how you can improve your franchise – any effort that you put into improving your franchise business should also result in improvements for your customers and investors, as well as the employees of your franchise business. Everyone from the top to the bottom of the franchise arrangement will benefit when you spend time on franchise development and better serve the customers, the franchisees and yourself. I wish you the best of luck in growing your franchise company, and I hope that you are able to apply the ideas that have been discussed here to improve your franchise company and the way that it does business.
