Snack-In-The-Box Ltd - Compact Vending logo

Snack-In-The-Box Ltd - Compact Vending

Vending Concept - Snack-in-the-Box has been "delivering snacks to your workplace" in association with Cadbury since 1991. The concept originally began by servicing clients with between 2 - 20 employees (see the SELF SERVICE BOX).

About Us

So successful was the self-service box franchise opportunity and our growing relationship with Cadbury that in October 2000 a second franchise was launched. SITB had identified the demand for an on-site snacks and soft drinks facility in the 25 - 100 employee workplace. This market sector was too small to be satisfied by conventional vending and it was a natural extension of the core business to develop "Compact" vending. In association with Cadbury a complete range of compact machines have allowed an expanding network of franchisees to satisfy this additional growth sector.

Compact Vending Solutions has been designed for the niche market of businesses with staff levels of 25 - 100. Some machines in the range do not require electricity. SITB and Cadbury have the winning combination to capture this medium size market and currently there are over 6000 customers in the UK and Ireland who benefit from the "slimline compact" vending solution.

The Package

Our Franchisee places the machines into business sites at no cost to the employer. With no contracts to sign or ongoing maintenance costs to pay its easy for the employer to say "yes". They simply pay for what they eat it couldn't be easier. Vending confectionery, savoury snacks and soft drinks makes this range a real winner. Its unique design means that it can fit neatly into almost any workplace.

Providing snack facilities to the workplace in a professional reliable and friendly way, along with strong Cadbury marketing support has been the key to the SITB success story. Calling to offer a delivery service with a brand that can be easily recognised certainly gives SITB the edge over any would-be competitor.

Enjoying Full Membership status of the British Franchise Association SITB is totally committed to providing a professional snack delivery service & excellent franchisor support.

Case Study 1

The support has been absolutely great.

"The initial appeal of SITB was the constant turnover we could expect from the machines," says Shropshire franchisee Ricky Fairall. "Of course, a very strong factor was the Cadbury branding - it's such a strong and prominent brand in the marketplace we knew it would only benefit our business."

As an independent financial advisor with a background in the insurance business, Ricky says he became more and more disillusioned with the industry. "I wanted to continue working for myself but thought that it would be great if I could work with my wife Anita. She was considering changing her job and so the opportunity arose for us to start a business of our own."

Carefully considering their options, the couple began looking for business opportunities over a two-year period. For them, most important was financial security. "We wanted something that would be near to failsafe and this led us to the idea of a vending business," recalls Ricky. "We discovered a SITB franchise for sale and knew it was the one for us. We were very impressed and invested in the business in early 2005."

After a period of training at head office, the couple were taken onsite to work with an existing franchisee. "This franchise was run by another couple," Ricky explains. "SITB gave us the chance to see exactly what the work would be like for us. We thought that this personable approach was wonderful."

By purchasing a established business, Ricky and Anita inherited a number of pre-sited machines. However, Ricky says he was eager to invest in more machines. "SITB were great in helping us find more sites and are still helping us by advising us on possible sites in our area as and when they appear," he reveals. "The support we have received has been absolutely great and SITB have been there every time we needed them. They don't interfere with your business, but they are there if you need them."

After increasing the business’s turnover by 50 per cent in their first year, Ricky and Anita are looking forward to continuing this steady growth. "My wife and I are very much enjoying our work as well as the opportunity to spend more time with each other," enthuses Ricky. "It's worked out very well for us indeed."

Case Study 2

Business Without Hassle

AFTER 17 years of early mornings and late closing, former newsagent David Durham picked up a copy of The Franchise Magazine seeking an opportunity to take control over the hours he put in. "Being in newsagency, the Cadbury brand immediately attracted my interest," he recalls.

"But as I read about SITB, particularly the vending machine opportunity, I recognised a good value investment that would reward me for the hours I worked."

David met the SITB head office team last August and after taking time to research the opportunity he signed for the Glasgow territory just before Christmas. "The company is very professional - they've been operating this business for something like ten years," he observes.

"At the same time there is a family atmosphere. You get to know everyone at head office and are never left talking to a stranger when you phone up."

David's initial training started in January 2004 and he launched his business at the start of February, with the assistance of a SITB canvassing team. "They had a lot of sites waiting for me, such as companies who used our service in other areas," he observes. "We picked up a lot of business very quickly and by mid-February I had all 50 of my initial vending machines sited and turning over an average of £1,200 per week."

Through canvassing and word-of-mouth rather than advertising David has now sited 100 vending machines and is beginning to re-site the lower performing ones. "I'm generating £2,200 per week, not far off my target of £2,500," he reports. "The ability to build the business up without the hassle of employment was another attraction to investing in the franchise, but the size of my territory will eventually demand that I expand my business with a second van."
